Caroline Kraus left her sheltered, upper-class home and upbringing to move to San Francisco after the death of her mother. In her search for clarity and a fresh perspective on life she meets Jane who offers her the warmth, intuitive understanding, and female companionship she craves. But gradually Caroline discovers the dark side of Jane. As Jane's subtle manipulations blossom into emotional blackmail, alarming promiscuity, financial ruin, and physical aggression, Caroline must fight to regain her sense of self.
