Paralyzed criminologist Lincoln Rhyme and his beautiful protegee and lover Amelia Sachs are recruited by the FBI to help locate "the Ghost," a professional human smuggler and killer who is combing New York for two Chinese families who escaped into the city after he blew up the boat on which they were traveling.
