Forensic investigator Dr. Kay Scarpetta is called back to Richmond, Virginia, five years after being fired, to help the new Chief Medical Examiner figure out what killed a fourteen-year-old girl who seems to have no cause of death, while Scarpetta's niece, holding down the office in Florida, tries to deal with a stalker.
