Quadriplegic criminologist Lincoln Rhyme's relationship with his protegee and lover Amelia Sachs is put to the ultimate test when they travel to North Carolina where Rhyme is scheduled for experimental surgery and are drawn into a local case of kidnapping, rape, and murder that pits the two detectives against one another.
