The old ball game

Baseball's beginnings

The old ball game was just playground softball--no uniforms, no gloves. Just a bat and a rubber-covered ball about the size of a grape-fruit. There was little strategy in the game. The pitcher tossed the ball in there for the batter to hit--no speed, no curves, no rainbow arch.
