Speed in baseball is elusive, both as a commodity and as statistic. It's the first thing scouts look for in a ballplayer, because it's the one thing that can't be taught. Yet it is the least measurable weapon in the game. Timing and rhythm are baseball's moorings; speed can knock both for a loop.
