Platypus

The history of the scientific debate over the platypus, a mammal with a bill like that of a duck, which began in 1799 when a dried specimen reached England from Australia. Scientists at first believed that it was a hoax but later determined it was a real animal. In this age of animal classification, however, it was the center of much debate.
