Waiting for unicorns

After her mother dies and not even their shared hidden jar of wishes gives her comfort, twelve-year-old Talia's father, a whale researcher, drags her off to Alaska for the summer. Talia, feeling abandoned by both parents, finds comfort with the wise old Inuit woman she must live with, who tells her tales of the "unicorn of the sea," which might grant wishes.
