The thirteenth child

In late nineteenth-century England, Jemima, an unwanted thirteenth child, grows up in poverty under the wing of her drunken mother while pursuing her dream of becoming a teacher, struggling with loyalty to her family, and befriending Richard, the heir to the haberdashery business where she works.
