Nathan Active, given up for adoption by his fifteen-year-old mother, an Inupiat girl, returns to the village of his birth as a state trooper where he enlists the help of beautiful villager Lucy Generous in solving the mystery of a series of atypical suicides, and in coming to understand his Eskimo heritage.
