"Stories retold here were first composed in time beyond memory by people living in that part of the north which is now called Finland, and in neighboring countries . . The present writer has altered the arrangement slightly, shortened a few passages, and omitted some details . . . [but] has earnestly sought to make this text as faithful as its nature permitted to the spirit of the Kalevala.".
