Rand al'Thor and his friends flee the trollocs that are ransacking their village under the protection of Moiraine and her Warder, Lan Mandragoran, who use powerful magic to protect the young friends from evil. Pursued by the Dark One's servants, they travel to Baerlon in search of sanctuary. Meanwhile, Rand's dreams get darker and threaten his sanity, and paranoia takes its toll on the group.
