Dylan's dreams of leaving Australia to go to Paris with her French mother, where, she thinks, her black skin won't make her stand out, are shattered when her mother dies in a freak accident. Now on a very different journey, Dylan travels across the Australian outback with Pat, her mother's grief-stricken boyfriend, to meet family she has never known and attempt to redefine her identity now.
