Bumps in the night

Twelve-year-old Rika Lovelace-Rose has been having trouble expressing her feelings about her parents' divorce and her absent mother. When she gets in trouble for vandalism again, her father sends her from Colorado to Trinidad, where she's to spend the summer with her maternal grandmother. As soon as she arrives, things feel different on the island and she meets a group of kids her age that seem to have magical abilities. When she finds a grimoire that speaks to her, she learns she is a witch and that her mother is being held captive. Embracing her heritage and magical abilities, she joins with her new friends to take on the fearsome jumbie king in a harrowing maze.
