Dr. Warthrop and his new assistant, Arkwright, embark on a journey to search for the "Holy Grail of Monstrumology," leaving Will Henry in New York to enjoy a normal life with a normal family, but when Arkwright returns claiming that the doctor is dead, Will travels to Socotra, the Isle of Blood, to see if the claims are true.

In 1888, twelve-year-old Will Henry chronicles his apprenticeship with Dr. Warthrop, a New England scientist who hunts and studies real-life monsters, as they discover and attempt to destroy the Wendigo, a creature that starves even as it gorges itself on human flesh.
