A German aristocrat, Helmuth James von Moltke, uses his skills as an international lawyer to circumvent the worst of Hitler's regime. By tipping off and gathering military information he aides the Allies aswell as many Jews. His actions lead to his "trail" as well as his death.

At a time when most Americans ignored the atrocities going on in Europe in 1940, American journalist Varian Fry put himself in great danger to save strangers in a foreign land. He was instrumental in the rescue of more than 2,000 refugees, including novelist Heinrich Mann and artist Marc Chagall. He remained in France for over a year until he was forcibly evicted.

After the Nazis destroy his family, twelve-year-old Moishe gives up his Jewish faith, calls himself Danny, and is taken to New York where he tries to make the best of his life in a Catholic orphanage.
