Roland Deschain makes his way to the outskirts of Calla Bryn Sturgis where he meets Father Callahan, who tells him of the Thunderclap that is gathering outside of town that is going to steal the souls of all the residents.
The Gunslinger, also known as Roland, advances his travels to the Dark Tower at the same time that the demon-mother takes over the body of a woman so that she can give birth to her demon-child.
Roland and his band of followers have narrowly escaped one world and slipped into the next. There Roland tells them a tale of long-ago love and adventure involving a beautiful and quixotic woman named Susan Delgado.
