Arthur Kipps, a London solicitor, is sent to Crythin Gifford to settle the deceased Mrs. Alice Drablow of Eel Marsh House's affairs. Routine turns to nightmare as Arthur increasingly becomes haunted by ghostly sounds and images, culminating in the sight of a woman dressed all in black.
