Lily and her twin sister Mel live in a Farm, where the inhuman Vampires, known as Ticks, keep young people to farm their blood for food. Mel is autistic, and though she cannot speak, she notices things other kids don't--like the gap in the electric fence that goes off each night. Lily and a schoolmate from the Before--before the Tick outbreak--named Carter, who was the Farm's most recent capture. He has outside information that could help them escape, but he may have an agenda of his own.
