While he is enjoying a quiet afternoon in the forest, an an angry spirit tries to possess Takashi, who fends off the attack but gets caught up in tracking down an evil spirit that threatens the life of the forest. What the yokai is not telling him, however, is going to mean trouble for Takashi.

Takashi Natsume, a troubled high school student with the ability to see hidden spirits and demons, drifts from relative to relative and ends up in the small town where his grandmother was raised, where he learns the full extent of his inherited gift.
