The Inner war

my journey from pain to peace
2016
Gerda Hartwich Robinson narrates her story as a German survivor of World War II. She tells how her life's journey included hunger, fear, neglect, and physical and emotional abuse, and how she carried these injustices in her mind and body for many years, leading to debilitating back pain, headaches, panic attacks, depression, and feelings of inadequacy. Robinson shows that the tragedies of war don't end when the last bomb is dropped or the last prisoner freed; they continue in subtle but devastating ways. Like many German citizens during and after the war, Robinson was simply trying to survive a terrifying situation.

The Richest man who ever lived

the life and times of Jacob Fugger
In the days when Christopher Columbus lived, there was a German banker named Jacob Fugger who, even today, was the richest man in history. Through a mixture of gumption, chicanery, and intellect, Fugger spotted opportunities, pioneered new business strategies, and got the best of opponents in negotiations. He had the savvy to get the pope to legalize money lending. He had the nerve to stare down kings and make them pay back their loans with interest. And he had the intellect to run his business empire with great skill and therefore keep his head, literally, in an age where power and wealth sometimes meant death for the owner.

Hustling Hitler

the Jewish vaudevillian who fooled the F?hrer
All his life journalist Walter Shapiro had heard outlandish stories about his great-uncle Freeman Bernstein. He assumed they were exaggerated family lore---Jewish revenge fantasies dreamt up to entertain the kids. Only when he started to research Freeman's life, did he realize that his family was actually holding back---there were even more stories to tell. From a ragtag childhood in Troy, New York, Freeman made his way through life as a vaudeville manager (where he met his wife, May Ward, who became Mae West), boxing promoter, stock swindler, card shark, and the self-proclaimed "Jade King of China". Then, on February 18, 1937, he was arrested by the LAPD outside of Mae West's apartment in Hollywood. The charge? Grand larcency---for cheating Adolf Hitler and the Nazi government. Freeman had promised to ship thirty-five tons of embargoed Canadian nickel to the Furher. When the cargo arrived, the Germans found only huge, useless quantities of scrap metal and tin. The fake shipment was a huge blow to their economy, war preparations, schedule, and ego. Hitler did not take the bait-and-switch lightly and sent the police after him. But Freeman Bernstein had the last laugh. He swindled Adolf Hitler---and got away with it!.
