In January 1941, William Sharpe, age thirteen, accompanies his father on a diplomatic mission to Vichy, France, capital of a satellite state formed after the fall of France to the German blitzkrieg in 1940. He attends a French school and makes some French friends. Among them is Renee, a refugee girl with a mysterious past. When the Germans occupy Vichy in 1941, he flees with his friends to the Resistance, where they fight against the brutal rule of French fascists and the German SS. When American troops land in southern France in August 1944, he joins the U.S. Third Infantry Division and participates in the battles experienced by the author. The novel has a touch of romance and a bittersweet ending.
