Oscar de la Renta was born in the Dominican Republic in 1932. At the age of nineteen he left to study art in Madrid where he rose to prominence as a sketch artist for newspapers and fashion houses. His apprenticeship under Christobal Balenciaga defined his tastes as a designer who used simple lines with a Flamenco dancer's fourish. Oscar de la Renta dressed first ladies from Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis to Michele Obama, and celebrities from Beyonce to Sarah Jessica Parker.
