Clara Carter makes her debut in New York City in the late nineteenth century with the admonition that she must attract and marry the wealthy Franklin DeVries, but she finds herself torn between friendship and duty when she learns her friend Lizzie is also trying for Franklin, and she meets a less suitable but more appealing man.
