When ten-year-old Elizabeth Brightman and her parents move from Connecticut to Nova Scotia in 1762 to farm the land left vacant after the expulsion of the Acadians, she is troubled that their new home looks just like the one in her recurring dream of a house on fire.

Seventeen-year-old Lyn, working in a reconstructed colonial settlement in Nova Scotia, suddenly finds herself transported back to 1744, when the French inhabitants are at war with England.

Phlippe, his French mother dead, goes searching for his English father in the midst of the battle at the Fortress of Louisburg in 1713, and feels his loyalties divided as he becomes involved in helping Gaby, a French girl, escape the fortress and reach safety with the two babies in her care, as well as a young slave boy who has been mistreated by his master.
