Sookie Stackhouse, a waitress in Bon Temps, Louisiana, who has a vampire boyfriend and the ability to read minds, turns down the request of former barmaid Arlene when she wants her job back, but then Arlene is found murdered and Sookie, after making bail, realizes that she must discover the truth with the help of her friends both living and undead.
