Twelve-year-old, independent and resentful, Robin must decide whether to go with her migratory worker family or stay at the McCurdy ranch as a companion to young Gwen McCurdy. After an exciting brush with thieves and a fire, Robin and her family settle down to a new life.
Robin finds a haven from the world and the confusion she feels in the velvet room of the deserted McGurdy mansion. The story is set in California during the American Great Depression.
