Mermaids Shelly and Echo are excited to begin third grade at the prestigious Trident Academy, but snooty Pearl, jokester Rocky, brilliant Kiki, grumpy Mr. Fangtooth, and an argument over their first project challenge the best friends. Echo and Kiki help Shelly prepare for the arrival of her royal great-aunt, Queen Edwina.

When a shark is spotted in Trident City, third-grade mergirl Pearl is terrified. Then to make matters worse, Pearl's special necklace goes missing. Pearl accuses another mergirl, Kiki, of stealing her necklace and says mean things about Kiki to get her in trouble. Only when Pearl has a dangerous encounter with a shark, does she see the value of her friend.

When third-grader Shelly Siren finds out she is a real princess she starts to wonder if she should act differently.
