Twelve-year-old Elspeth Monro, a Scottish settler and weaver's apprentice on the North Carolina frontier in 1775, must find out who is betraying her Loyalist family during the months before the start of the Revolutionary War.

In the summer of 1934, Kit visits her aunt Millie in the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky and finds herself investigating who is sabotaging a folklore researcher.

Orphaned when their father dies fighting for the Union and mother expires from exhaustion, and also estranged from their Confederate neighbors, fifteen-year-old Hannah and her siblings struggle to find a way to survive during the Civil War in Tennessee.
