Police constable Hamish Macbeth races to clear his name and find a killer after a supposed witch, who sold potions to men suffering from sexual dysfunction and whose practices Hamish openly disagreed with, is found dead.

Scottish blacksmith Ewan Macgregor and his fourteen-year-old son Davey are exiled to Australia in 1848 after being convicted of poaching, and his wife, Mary-Ann, determined to keep her family together, sets sail with her three youngest children, in search of them.

The Thomases, an English couple, move into the sleepy Scottish Highlands. There Trixie, a model of domestic efficiency, turns things around in the village.
