When Grace Mae is sent to the Boston insane asylum she is pregnant with her father's baby and mute. But when the staff of the asylum push her too far, her voice erupts as she acts out violently causing her to lose her baby. Locked away in the basement for her actions, Grace is discovered by a visiting doctor who sees a brilliance inside her mind. He sneaks her away to his asylum in Ohio where she assists him in solving a string of murders. But the pair soon find themselves in the sights of the murderer, and Grace will need to face the pain she has been hiding from within herself so she can survive.

Near the turn of the nineteenth century, Dr. Thornhollow helps teenaged Grace Mae escape from the Boston asylum where she was sent after becoming pregnant by rape, and takes her to Ohio where they put her intelligence and remarkable memory to use in trying to catch murderers.
