Hannah, a blind girl living in Michigan in the late nineteenth century, doesn't go to school until a new teacher tells her about the Braille method of reading for the blind.
Nine-year-old Hannah is destined for a sheltered, unhappy life until Miss Lydia Robbin, the school teacher, comes along and convinces Hannah's parents that the girl's blindness should not keep her from going to school and having a life.
