A story about the brutality of war. A German sergeant has made friends of the people in the French village where he is forced to kill six underground hostages. It is not until 1964 when the French and German teams meet in a World Cup soccer game that he is able to face his conscience.

Hans von Kleinschrodt, stationed in Normandy during World War II, became a friend of the villagers. Then an explosive Underground incident occurred. Hans was ordered to kill six hostages in reprisal and faceda crisis of conscience. The killing follows Hans for the rest of his life and is played out during a French /German World Cup championship game twenty years later.
