Sixteen-year-old Lassair, a healer, is sent to care for her cousin Morcar after he is violently attacked, and she determines to learn the truth when it becomes clear that the would-be assassins did not want Morcar to reveal that he had seen a white-haired youth being dragged into St. Ely monastery, apparently against the boy's will.
