In 1603, thirteen-year-old John Rice travels to London to become an apprentice with the King's Men theater troupe. There, John studies and plays the role of women in Shakespeare's plays and falls in love with Alexander, a fellow actor who had grown to old to play the female roles. Presented as a fictional memoir of a real "boy player" of the King's Men.
