In 1950 Alabama, Sofie and her husband, one of many German scientists pardoned and granted a position in America's space program, find their family torn apart by an act of violence after rumors about their affiliation with the Nazi party surface.

Set during World War II in Poland, a novel based on real-life heroes follows Elzbieta Rabinek over the course of the war, her involvement with the Resistance, and her love for a young man imprisoned in the Jewish ghetto whose passion leads him to fight in the Warsaw Uprising.

Told through alternating voices of Alice in present day and Alice's grandmother Alina in Nazi-occupied Poland, the story tells of Alina's struggle to survive the Nazi occupation of Poland during World War II and years later her granddaughter Alice's journey to uncover the secrets of Alice's past that still affect their family in the present.
