Larger dragons called ryu are gone forever, disappearing from Japan after World War II, and all that are left are small ryu that can fit in the palm of one's hand. Kohei Fujiwara loves his ryu, Yuharu, but he can't shake the feeling that he's seen a big ryu once. When he was little, he always dreamed of going on a grand quest to bring the big ryu back in order to make his grandpa, Ojisan, happy again. As Ojisan's health worsens, Kohei embarks on a mission to bring back the big ryu with the help of Isolde, his new half-Jewish, half-Japanese neighbor and Isolde's Yiddish-speaking dragon, Cheshire.
