Edie works for the Elysian Society, a secretive service that allows grieving clients to contact their lost loved ones. Edie dresses like the deceased, then swallows a pill called "lotus" to summon their departed minds into hers and let her own mind sink into the background. She tries not to become emotionally involved with her clients, but her latest, Patrick Braddock, and his departed wife Sylvia, become too interesting, and attractive, for her to stay away, and soon, Edie's quiet life begins unraveling as she uses lotus pills to summon Sylvia more, and Sylvia starts taking over.
