the NYPD Jewish cop who traveled the world to stop terrorists
Dzikansky, Mordecai
2010
Former NYC homicide detective Mordecai Dzikansky spent twenty-five years patrolling Brooklyn streets. As an undercover cop he helped catch a band of Torah thieves and investigated the shooting of rapper Tupac Shakur. After 9/11, the NYPD sent him to Israel to monitor suicide bombings to help protect New York from further terror. His visits to bombing sites in Israel and elsewhere made him a world authority on such bombings. As a result of his investigations, he became a victim of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). After his recovery and retirement he moved to Israel to live and now lectures and consults on terrorism.
On June 27, 1976, Air France Flight 139 was hijacked by terrorists to Entebbe Airport in Uganda. In the following days, passengers were singled out and held hostage. A week later, a small band of Israeli commandos raced 2,500 miles from Israel to Entebbe in the middle of the night and in ninety minutes killed all of the hijackers and freed 103 hostages. The terrorists were supported by Ugandan president Idi Amin, and this marked one of the first times the leader of a nation backed terrorist activities. The mission was named Operation Thunderbolt and it has become a legendary antiterrorist tale, and is especially pertinent to what is going on in the world today.
